Ciao Italia Debut! Italian Language Club Launches with Passion
Ciao Italia – First Event
On the afternoon of April 11th, bursts of laughter and applause in Italian echoed through the conference hall of the Shanghai Italian Innovation Center. This was not an ordinary language class, but a demonstration meeting of the Ciao Italia Italian Speaking Club, organized strictly in accordance with the standard procedures of Toastmasters International.
Dozens of Italian language enthusiasts gathered together — from absolute beginners to advanced learners, and even native Italian speakers — forming a diverse space that spanned all language levels. Behind the free and lively conversations, a precisely operating meeting mechanism provided solid support.

A "Structured" Language Gathering
As the event began, the SAA (Sergeant at Arms) announced the official start of the meeting. The club president delivered an opening address, and the host took the microphone, setting the rhythm for the entire session.
Unlike typical language corners, Ciao Italia introduced a complete Toastmasters role system: Timer, Table Topics Master, Prepared Speaker, Evaluator, and others, each playing their part. The Timer, holding green, yellow, and red cards, strictly controlled the duration of every segment — a bell rang at 2 minutes and 30 seconds for impromptu speeches, and at 5 minutes and 30 seconds for prepared speeches, with polite time limits enforced.

"This is not to restrict anyone, but to give everyone an equal opportunity to express themselves," the host explained when introducing the rules. This respect for time actually made the speeches more concise and powerful.

A Sustainable Sino-Italian Cultural Platform
As a key cultural exchange brand developed by the Shanghai Italian Innovation Center, Ciao Italia is far more than a single event. In the future, the club will continue to hold regular activities, including themed salons, film screenings, scenario workshops, and other diverse formats. It will also collaborate with university resources in Yangpu District and Italian cultural and educational institutions, extending language learning into cultural understanding, talent exchange, and even Sino-Italian industrial cooperation.
The success of the first demonstration meeting proves one thing: language is not a barrier but a bridge; rules are not constraints but the boundaries of the stage. When Italian romance meets Chinese precision in a meeting room, when red and green cards sound together with Italian pronunciation — Ciao Italia is opening a brand new door for Italian language enthusiasts in Shanghai.
